Emu
Four male emu chicks came to the
Zoo from a farm in Texas weighing less than 2 pounds each. They
are now four months old and weigh about 25 pounds each. When
fully grown they will stand 2 meters tall.
Emus are the second largest birds
in the world. In fact the name emu comes from a Portuguese word
that means “large bird.” For something so large they are
amazingly quick, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour in
short bursts with a stride of nine feet.
Native only to Australia, Emus
have been on exhibit at the Louisville Zoo for 30 years.
EXHIBIT SCHEDULE
They are currently on exhibit at the
Louisville Zoo’s Wallaroo Walkabout, a nose-to-animal open exhibit.
