Zoo Guests Invited to Vote on Baby Zebra Names

Contest presented by Floyd Memorial Birthing Center

Nearly 5,000 names were submitted in the Zoo’s Baby Zebra naming contest presented by Floyd Memorial Birthing Center.  Participants were asked to submit a female name for the Zoo’s newest addition – a female Hartmann’s mountain zebra born in January, 2013.

The zebra calf’s father is named Gibbs so many entrants submitted character names from the hit CBS show NCIS, whose main character is Gibbs.

The zookeepers who care for the Zebra narrowed it down to three names:

Abby – character on the hit CBS show NCIS

Katniss – Main character in the popular movie Hunger Games played by one of Louisville’s hometown heroes – Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence

Ziva - character on the hit CBS show NCIS

Zoo visitors now have the final vote. Now through Sunday, June 23, guests are invited to vote for their favorite name by making a monetary contribution in the voting kiosk on the Zoo’s Front Plaza. The name with the highest total donations wins and will be announced the week of June 24. All proceeds support the Zoo’s efforts to provide excellent care for animals, a great experience for our guests and a better future for all living things.

"The anticipation of finding out a baby's name is exciting,” adds Angie Glotzbach, Floyd Memorial Marketing & Public Relations Specialist. “The Floyd Memorial Birthing Center is proud to be a part of this special baby naming contest. Good luck to our top three entrants!"

The grand prize winner will receive Zoo Gifts and a tote bag from Floyd Memorial Birthing Center, four (4) Adventure Tickets and a special behind-the-scenes tour and bonding session with the Zebra for up to 5 persons.  Runner-up prizes include Zoo Gifts and a tote bag from Floyd Memorial Birthing Center and four (4) Adventure Tickets.

For the first time in 13 years the Louisville Zoo celebrated the birth of a female Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal. Born to Morena and Gibbs, the 72 lb. foal was birthed on January 18, 2013 at 2:45 a.m. The female foal took her first steps by 3:15 a.m. and was nursing by 3:17 a.m.

The Louisville Zoo, a non-profit organization and state zoo of Kentucky, is dedicated to bettering the bond between people and our planet by providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for visitors, and leadership in scientific research and conservation education.
