Floyd Memorial Birthing Center presents
Giraffe Naming Contest and
Bongo Naming Contest Winner
A male giraffe was born at the Louisville Zoo on June 27, 2012 and the Zoo wants help in naming the calf in a naming contest presented by Floyd Memorial Birthing Center. Additional support is presented by Lite106.9 and New Country Q103.1.
The Floyd Memorial Birthing Center Bongo Naming Contest just wrapped up and we are happy to announce that the three bongo calves will now be called Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. These names were selected by Zoo guests who voted for their favorite names by placing coins and bills into a kiosk on the Zoo’s plaza. Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira now share these names with the three extinct volcanoes that form Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Winning names were submitted by Lincoln and Amanda Roberson of Louisville.
GIRAFFE NAMING CONTEST
The Giraffe naming contest begins today and submissions for names must be received by midnight EST on Sunday, September 16, 2012. There is no purchase necessary to enter.
Three Ways to Enter:
- In person by 4 p.m. Friday, 9/14/2012 at the Louisville Zoo or Floyd Memorial Hospital Main Lobby, 1850 State Street, New Albany, IN 47150
- At the Zoo’s website at www.louisvillezoo.org/contest by midnight on Sunday, 9/16/2012 (or)

The Louisville Zoo will select three names as finalists from those submitted during the contest period August 30 – September 16, 2012. The public will then be invited to vote for their favorite name by means of a kiosk placed on the Zoo’s front plaza September 25 – October 14, 2012. Votes can be placed by making a contribution via coins or bills into the slot representing their preferred name. The name with the highest total donations will be named the winner and announced the week of October 15, 2012. All proceeds support the Zoo’s efforts to provide excellent care for animals, a great experience for our guests and important conservation and education programs.
The person submitting the winning name will be the grand prize winner and will receive a behind-the-scenes tour and rare bonding session with the giraffe plus the same prize package gifted to the two alternates finalists. The alternate prize package includes four Zoo Adventure tickets, items from the Zoo’s gift shop and a commemorative video (DVD) documenting our orphaned polar bear cub, Qannik’s first year of life and journey to Louisville.
“The Floyd Memorial Birthing Center is honored to support the Louisville Zoo by presenting this unique celebration of life to the community,” added Cindee Ferree, Marketing & Public Relations Supervisor, Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
