Earth Day Festival

On April 25 the Louisville Zoo will celebrate the planet with special $2 admission sponsored by E.ON U.S.

Join the Louisville Zoo and E.ON U.S. to help celebrate our planet with a special Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 25.

Special discount admission is just $2 per person all day, which is sponsored by E.ON U.S. (Admission for Zoo members and children under age 2 is free.)

Join the fun and find out what you can do to help save our planet. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., learn about the Zoo’s conservation efforts and visit environmental displays by eco-partners at stations throughout the Zoo. Discover ways to connect to the local environment and make a collective difference in conservation on a national and global level. Be sure to also pick up your free copy of the Toyota Backyard Action Hero Magazine.

The first 1,000 guests who bring an old cell phone for the Zoo’s cell phone recycling program will receive a FREE “I Helped Save Gorillas” cloth tote bag from E.ON U.S. and ECO-CELL, the Zoo’s partner in cell phone recycling. A limited number of tote bags will also be available for sale at $5 each. Proceeds will benefit the Zoo’s conservation fund.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the E.ON U.S. Mini-City, which depicts a small community and uses props and displays to teach electric safety to children, will be on hand in the ZooVision building. Smokey the Bear and E.ON U.S.’s Louie the Lightning Bug will meet and greet Zoo guests from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well.

A special tree-planting ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the giraffe exhibit with Mayor Jerry Abramson, Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak and Laura Douglas, Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs at E.ON U.S. The ceremony will cap off the Zoo’s participation in Acres for Atmosphere, a partnership project with Polar Bears International (PBI) where zoos around the world commit to plant an acre of trees. So far, more than 20 trees for the project have been purchased and planted throughout the Zoo though a generous grant from E.ON U.S.’s Plant for the Planet Program.

The Earth Day Festival event is the conclusion of Party for the Planet: A Month-long Celebration of the Earth sponsored by E.ON U.S.

Additional support is also provided by Toyota Georgetown, Yellowbook, SunWind Power Systems Inc., Bluegrass E-Cycle, DDC of Kentucky and ECO-CELL.

The Zoo encourages guests to ride their bike or take TARC to the celebration to help protect the environment. For a list of TARC’s buses and schedules, visit www.ridetarc.org.
