CENTER
VETERINARY
TECHNICIAN
PRECEPTORSHIP/EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
PURPOSE: To provide Veterinary
Technology Students an introduction to zoological medicine.
DEPARTMENT: The Animal Health
Center staff includes veterinarians,
hospital supervisor, veterinary technicians and keepers. They
oversee the health care of the Zoo's animals including mammals, birds
reptiles, amphibians and fish.
PROGRAM: Preferred
duration is at least 8 weeks and externships are available
throughout the year. Externs are expected to participate as a team
member in all veterinary department activities including assisting
in routine medical care, animal restraint, written and computerized
medical records and preparing for procedures including hematology,
parasite exams, urinalysis, cytology and preparing samples for
outside laboratories. Forty to fifty percent of a student’s time is
spent in the laboratory. Approximately 30% is spent preparing for,
assisting in and cleaning up after procedures. Hospital cleanliness,
treatments, record keeping and other duties make up the balance of
time. There is no stipend and housing is the responsibility of the
student.
HOURS: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Additional hours or weekends as required.
REQUIREMENTS: Proof of negative
tuberculosis test within 6 months prior to externship. Proof of
measles and hepatitis vaccination suggested, but not required.
Completion of parasitology and hematology labs is required.
Completion of anesthesia, urinalysis, microbiology courses strongly
recommended.

VETERINARY

Veterinary Technicians further study in zoological medicine

reptiles, amphibians and fish.
PROGRAM: Preferred duration is

Graduation from an AVMA approved veterinary technology program.
Preference given to applicants with prior exposure to zoo medicine
through externship and/or preceptorships.

VETERINARY PRECEPTORSHIP/EXTERNSHIP
PROGRAM
PURPOSE: To provide fourth-year
veterinary Students an introduction to zoological medicine.
DEPARTMENT: The Animal Health

hospital supervisor, veterinary technicians and keepers. They
oversee the health care of the Zoo's animals including mammals, birds
reptiles, amphibians and fish.
PROGRAM: Duration is
negotiable, but 6 weeks is preferred. Preceptorships/externships are
available throughout the year.
DESCRIPTION: Students are
expected to participate as a team member in all veterinary
department activities including:
HOURS: 8:30 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday, weekends and nights are required.
REQUIREMENTS: Proof of negative
tuberculosis test within 6 months of externship. Completion of
surgery and medicine clinic rotations prior to externship is
recommended.

PUBLIC RELATIONS/MARKETING INTERNSHIP
Practical experience plus the
philosophy of a conservation-minded, non-profit perspective is
offered during this program.
DEPARTMENT: The public affairs
department has grown from an in-house advertising agency to a
multi-departmental facility coordinated under the umbrella of modern
marketing principles.
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE:
The Public Relations Internship is offered for a minimum of six
weeks, with a minimum of at least two half days per week volunteer
time. More time is encouraged so the intern can gain a greater
continuity of practical experience.
DUTIES: When possible,
specific projects will be offered which will allow the intern a
sense of ownership and a project that may make an appropriate
addition to a portfolio. The program can be modified to fit mutual
schedules and extended to a semester format. Time worked will be
documented. There is no stipend.
The Intern will have a hands-on role in the Public Relations or
Marketing office. Exposure will include potential opportunities to
participate in the daily functions of the office, including the
following:

Customer complaints

KEEPER ASSISTANT
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE: All
day from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
DUTIES:

Report to Keeper of
assigned area

Work only in areas
approved by keeper staff. (No wandering)

Complete stalls and
service area cleaning, which involves pushing brooms, shoveling,
lifting and pushing heavy loads.

CLERICAL ASSISTANT
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE:
All day from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. / Half day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
DUTIES:

Staff with various duties: filing, typing; copying, stuffing
envelopes, answering phones,

Distribute membership applications

COMMISSARY ASSISTANT
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE: All
day from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. / 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
DUTIES:

Work in kitchen and grain room

Sweeping

Assisting with preparation of animal diets

Delivering diets to animal areas.
CONSERVATION CENTER ASSISTANT
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m.
until 12:30 p.m.
DUTIES: Report to Keeper in charge. Clean Black-footed ferret cages, help
with records, review tapes, mop floors in clean and “dirty” areas
and other jobs as assigned by keepter.
Volunteer will be required to follow these isolation policies:

Shower before entering clean room.
-
Wear surgical mask while in clean
room.
-
All personal pets (dogs, cats,
etc.) must have up-to-date vaccinations, especially canine
distemper.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

SPECIAL TRAINING REQUIRED

Teach classes about zoo animals
and how zoos function in today’s world and share information
about the animals around the Zoo with Zoo visitors.

Promote a conservation attitude.

HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE: All
day from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. / Half day from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
DUTIES:

Report to Horticulture Supervisor
or supervisor in charge for work assignment.

Cut grass using a mower, Trim
around signs, flowers, bushes, ditch line and around trees with
a gas power weed eater.

Clean Zoo areas, pick up litter in
Zoo
-
Mulch and plant flower beds.
-
Water plants/,trees
-
Rake leaves.
VOLUNTEERING IN DAY CAMP
PREFERRED TIME SCHEDULE: 8:45
a.m. until 12:30 p.m. / 8:45 a.m. until 4 p.m. (will vary).
DUTIES:
-
Assist Camp
Counselors in whatever way they require. Generally, this means to
help with crafts, hand holding and “crowd control.”
-
(Very Important) You will stay with the group to which you have been
assigned. If you have to leave, be sure to check with the counselor.
It is much better for the children to do as much as possible for
themselves when it comes to answering questions and doing craft
projects.
-
Counselors and Youth encourage and guide but never do
campers’ projects for them.
