FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS / CONTACT US

The Louisville Zoo welcomes your Comments and Questions

Please note that the Louisville Zoo receives a considerable amount of electronic correspondence. We strive for a 2-3 day turn-around (Monday through Friday) for those messages requiring a response. If you have a pressing concern please contact us by phone during normal business hours at (502) 459-2181.

Please be sure to read through these Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do you take in animals?
No. The Zoo simply does not have the space or resources to house ex-Pets or animals other than those in our collection.

  2. What should I do if I find an injured animal?
If you find an injured or orphaned animal such as a bird or squirrel, please DO NOT bring it to the Zoo.
Click for more information on birds or mammals.

  3. Do you charge for parking?
No, not during normal Zoo hours. For special after-hours events such as "The World's Largest Halloween Party!", we currently charge a $5.00 parking fee.

  4. Can I bring food or coolers into the Zoo?
Food and coolers are welcome at the Louisville Zoo. We have several picnic areas that are wonderful for an afternoon meal alongside nature. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited and picnic tables are available on a first come-first served basis.

  5. I'm a member. Do I need anything other than my membership card to enter the Zoo?
We ask that members ALWAYS bring a photo ID for any adult members named on the card that are coming in to the Zoo.

  6. I am a member of another Zoo, can I use my membership and enter the Louisville Zoo for free?
If your current membership is held with a Zoo that participates in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) reciprocal program with the Louisville Zoo, you may receive free or discounted general admission to the Zoo during regular hours. The discount applies to admission only and does not include special or after hours events. Please check our list of reciprocal institutions by visiting http://www.aza.org/reciprocity. Or call 459-2181 ext. 603.

  7. Can I use my membership at the Newport Aquarium?
The Newport Aquarium provides a $3.00 discount on regular admission for Louisville Zoo members when they present your valid Louisville Zoo membership card at the Newport Aquarium. This offer cannot be combined with any other coupons or discounts, is not valid for one-line ticket purchases and is not redeemable for cash. Please click here for further information.

  8. How do I get a job with the Louisville Zoo or volunteer to help out?
Please visit our Employment section or our Volunteer section.

  9. When is the best time to see the gorillas?
Like humans, gorillas do not have a set time for activity. Usually, early in the morning and in the late afternoon/evening is when they are more energetic.

  10. How many animals do you have?
The Louisville Zoo has over 1,300 animals exhibited in beautiful natural settings. Favorites include gorillas, lions, tigers, penguins, pygmy hippos, orangutans, reptiles, hundreds of colorful birds and many more.

  11. Do you have motorized wheelchairs?
We have 4 motorized wheelchairs/scooters that may be rented for $26 per day on a first-come first-served basis. A drivers' license/photo ID is required. We also have a limited number of non-motorized wheelchairs that are available for $8 per day also on a first come – first served basis. Please note there is a 300 pound weight limit for the electric scooters due to the hilly terrain. You may also want to consider utilizing the ZooTram that circles the Zoo and drops visitors off at key stops along the way. There is a $2.00 per day fee for unlimited use of the tram.

  12. Where can I buy Bamboo like that used in Gorilla Forest?
The Louisville Zoo uses several different varieties of Bamboo. The predominant ones are "Yellow Grove" & "Nuda." The best source of Bamboo in the Louisville area is Richard Wolford in Middletown (245-6097). But he warns all to be careful because bamboo can become invasive and precautions should be taken to keep it in check.

For the animal's health and safety exhibits are not open beyond dusk with the exception of the HerpAquarium.
