Adopt a Garden
The Louisville Zoological Garden would like to
introduce our new volunteer gardening program called
"Adopt A Garden."
Experienced green thumbs are invited to adopt
a garden site in the Louisville Zoo and care for it for the entire
growing season. Specific garden sites in the Zoo may be adopted by
individuals, families or groups. Sizes of the garden plots vary and
they are located throughout the Zoo.
After volunteers sign and select a garden
plot, they will submit a plan for their plot. Volunteers are
responsible for planting the garden, weeding, watering and
maintaining it throughout the growing season, including putting it
to bed in the fall. Cost of plants is at the volunteers
expense or, with prior permission, they can bring plants from their
own yards. The cost of plants may be tax deductible. Individual
garden signs with the volunteer's name will mark each garden site.
There is no training provided as this is
program designed for experienced gardeners. However, benefits
include meeting the keepers and learning about the animals while
helping to beautify your Zoo. In your garden you may want to create
a Gorilla salad bar or grow food for other exotic species as an
alternative to flowers.
The season runs mid-April through
mid-November. All persons interested in adopting a garden will be
required to attend an orientation session where the specific details
of the program will be discussed. Gardeners will be able to enter
the Zoo as early as 8:00 a.m. and can garden until 4 p.m. throughout the Zoo in selected areas.
This new opportunity is a wonderful way to
indulge your passion for gardening and help make the Louisville Zoo
an even more beautiful resource for our community. Come join us!
