The Louisville Zoo is
the State Zoo of Kentucky and one of the most popular non-profit
attractions in the region with over 850,000 annual visitors.
Take a walk through Africa. Or tour the
ISLANDS. Enjoy 134 beautifully landscaped acres in the center of
Louisville. The Louisville Zoo transports visitors into the habitats of
over 1,700 of the rarest animals on earth. Recognized for innovative
habitat design and exotic gardens, the Louisville Zoo introduces you to
orangutans, tapir, bats, tigers and colorful and rare birds in the
award-winning ISLANDS village. Dine in the ISLANDS Pavilion overlooking
the rainforest aviary.
Or, take an African
expedition with a panoramic view of the Savannah, home of elephants,
giraffes, zebras, rhinos and lions. Refresh yourself at the African
Outpost, a beautiful restaurant decorated with African masks and
sculpture, before visiting the whimsical meerkats and naked molerats.
Discover fish,
amphibians, reptiles and Komodo Dragons in the indoor HerpAquarium.
Brilliantly colored lorikeets wing their way around the aviary at
Lorikeet Landing, ready to eat special nectar right from your hands
while the wallabies
await you in the Wallaroo Walkabout.
Wander deep into the heart of Africa to discover a world of gorillas,
the influence of African culture and the botanical diversity of the
forest. A wildlife highway and discovery trail winds through the lush
tropical growth offering underwater viewing of pygmy hippos and early
glimpses through the tall grasses into the gorilla habitat. As
travelers venture further, they will discover the gentle giants, Western
lowland gorillas.
Glacier Run is modeled after an arctic mining town
where polar bears and other arctic wildlife are learning to live in
balance with one another. This exhibit will teach visitors about some of
the most pressing envioronmental issues of our time including climate
change - it will also offer ways we can help protect arctic habitats and
the planet.
