Family Classes
Bring the family and learn together about
the world we live in. This program is designed for families with
children four years old and up. Meet your instructor at the Front
Gate and learn with us! Children must be accompanied by an adult. .
Cost per session:
Individual: Regular $20; Members $15
Family of 4: Regular $70; Members $50
(additional participants $10 each)
“Breakfast with the Butterflies”
Saturday, May 19, (8:30–10 a.m.)
Enjoy a simple continental breakfast and
be surrounded by the beautiful Etscorn Garden that should be in full
bloom at this time of year. Learn about butterflies and how to
attract them to your own yard. In case of inclement weather this
program will be held indoors.

Safari Day Camp
Introduce your child to a camp experience
found in few other places. Camp activities are age-appropriate and
will include nature study, arts and crafts, controlled animal
contact and Zoo walks. All campers receive a Safari Day Camp
t-shirt. Camps are Monday through Friday with the exception of the
week of the Fourth of July. Children attending full day sessions
from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. must bring a sack lunch and a drink. Lunches will
be refrigerated.

Animals Around the Clock
Do you ever wonder why some animals are
awake at night and some are awake during the day? Discover how the
rhythm of the day and night and the seasons throughout the year
affect animal behavior.

Let’s Eat!
Animals survive by eating a wide variety
of foods. Campers will learn about what animals eat in the wild and
at the Zoo. A visit to the Zoo’s Commissary where most of the animal
diets are prepared will be one of the many special experiences
planned for the week.

I Will Survive!
From camouflage to echolocation, all
animals have special characteristics that help them to survive in
the wild. Campers will explore the various survival techniques of
the plant and animal kingdoms.

Planet of Plenty
Biodiversity is the variety of life on
our planet – and there’s plenty of it! Campers will learn about the
wealth of habitats that house all life forms and the
interconnections that tie us together.

If you ran the Zoo, how would you change
it or expand it? Campers will learn all that is
required to create a new exhibit and they will meet several staff
members that help make our Zoo possible.

Zoo Detective
Every day brings a new mystery at the
Zoo! Campers will explore the Zoo and learn problem solving skills
to crack the case of the day. Join the fun and be a safari sleuth!

TRACK ‘EM, SMACK ‘EM, AND ROAR
The Louisville Tennis Center, the
Louisville Nature Center and the Louisville Zoo will again be
offering a week of non-stop excitement for children ages 8 – 12.
Campers will be tracking native wildlife at the Louisville Nature
Center, learning tennis skills on the courts of the Louisville
Tennis Center, and visiting with the wild creatures at the
Louisville Zoo. Both sessions are identical.
If your child has a tennis racket we suggest that
he/she bring it. Each participant must bring a lunch and dress
appropriately for outside play (tennis shoes are required).
Cost: Regular $195; LNC or Zoo Members $180

TEEN SAFARI
8-9th Grade
Teen Safari is designed to activate the
minds of young people using the wonderful resources of the
Louisville Zoo. Classes, activities and behind-the-scenes tours
provide an opportunity for teens to discover more about the Zoo, our
planet, and personal choices. Three sessions are offered. *Note:
Teens attend camp for the grades they are entering into for the
2012-2013 school year.
Cost: $180 Members, $195 Non-Members
Mythbusters – Zoo Style!
Myth, or fact? “Dinosaurs are just big
lizards.” “Polar bears eat penguins.” “Snakes smell fear.” Join us
to gain a better appreciation for our amazing natural world through
observation, experimentation and hands-on fun. Learn about the
scientific method and satisfy your curiosity about some really
strange things, too! Nothing will be blown up, but we bet you will
have a blast!
Session 1: June 11-15

Thursday 7 p.m.-Friday 9 a.m.

Teen Safari Sessions 1 and 2 will meet
Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. On
Thursday evening participants will meet at the Zoo at 7 p.m. for the
Night Safari which ends at
9 a.m. Friday morning.
Note: An evening cookout and breakfast
will be provided for the Night Safari. Monday through
Wednesday each teen should bring a sack lunch and drink.
Conservation Crusaders!
Conservation-minded teens unite! Did you
ever think about working at a Zoo, or another career in the field of
conservation? Lots of people dedicate their careers to protecting
our planet, and your actions make a difference, too! Join us to
learn about how our staff, others in our community, and YOU can
create a better world for all living things. We’ll talk to keepers,
speakers from local agencies, and each other to become leaders in
this exciting arena!
Session 3: July 16-20
Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Note: Teen Safari Session 3 will meet
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.- 4p.m. Each teen should bring a
sack lunch and drink each day.
Zoo Sproutz (Ages 2 & 3)
This new cool summer program has been
redesigned for children 2 and 3 years old and an adult. Activities
for this program will take into consideration that youngsters this
age are curious about the world around them and have the energy for
lots of action! The National Research Council notes that “preschool
children have a rich set of ideas, conceptual frameworks, and
reasoning skills.” With this in mind they will be encouraged to ask
questions and seek answers through exploration. This age appropriate
program incorporates learning centers and free play to cultivate
children’s’ connections to the natural world around them. Campers
must be accompanied by an adult.
Cost per session: (one adult & one child) Regular

June- Ears, Eyes and Noses, Oh My!
Children will be using their comparative
skills while they investigate the features of different types of
animals.

July-Body Basics
Ever wonder why elephants have a trunk or

ZOOper Kids will enjoy Zoo walks, crafts,
snacks, closely supervised contact with education animals and story
times. All campers receive a t-shirt. This program is

Ani-motion!
Snakes slither, birds fly, fish swim,
animals move in many different ways. During this week in class,
children will investigate and make comparisons about how animals
move.

Classification
What makes a lizard a reptile? Do all
birds hatch from eggs? Children will investigate the way animals are
grouped together by comparing similar and different traits.

The Five Senses
How does a snake “hear”? Why do cats have

Cancellation and Refund Policy
- Individuals who wish to cancel their registration in any class must
notify the Education Department, in writing, no less than one week
prior to the actual date of the class. We will refund 80% of the
class fee upon receipt of a written or email (danita.robbins@louisvilleky.gov) cancellation.
There will be no refunds for cancellations made less than one week
prior to class date.
- The
Education Department reserves the right to cancel classes with
insufficient registration.
- There
will be a $10 service charge for any changes in the original
registration.
- Pre-registration is required for all classes.
